Cognitive Ability Test for Hiring

Evaluate numerical, verbal, matrix, and spatial reasoning with a consistent 40-question assessment and a clear per-domain result.

What It Measures

Cognitive ability assessments sample how a candidate works with unfamiliar information under consistent conditions. HeyHRM's assessment covers four domains: - **Numerical reasoning:** interpreting quantities, tables, percentages, and basic quantitative relationships. - **Verbal reasoning:** understanding written information and drawing conclusions supported by the text. - **Matrix reasoning:** identifying patterns and rules in abstract visual information. - **Spatial reasoning:** mentally comparing or transforming visual arrangements. The assessment does not produce a clinical diagnosis or a universal measure of a person's potential. It samples performance on the included questions at one point in time. Language, disability, test conditions, familiarity, and the relevance of each domain to the job can affect how results should be interpreted. Use domain results to identify areas for structured follow-up. Employers should select only job-relevant dimensions, provide appropriate accommodations, and combine the result with other evidence rather than treating one score as a final decision.

How It Works

## How the Cognitive Ability Assessment Works The current cognitive battery contains 40 questions: 10 numerical, 10 verbal, 10 matrix-reasoning, and 10 spatial-reasoning items. The candidate flow displays a 15-minute overall timer. Once started, the timed assessment cannot be paused and resumed, so employers should arrange any approved accommodation before sending the invitation. Results show overall accuracy and efficiency plus accuracy by domain. Response time can provide context, but it should not be treated as proof of ability, effort, or misconduct. HeyHRM does not currently provide a norm-referenced candidate rank for this assessment. Before using the battery, document which domains relate to the job and how the result will inform the next stage. Give candidates in the same hiring lane comparable instructions, keep a human reviewer accountable, and validate the interpretation for the role and intended purpose.

Sample Questions

1. A report says revenue increased from $5.0M to $5.8M. What is the percentage increase?

2. A policy requires approval for any vendor spend above $2,500 per quarter. A team submits two invoices for $1,600 in the same quarter. What should happen?

3. If a visual sequence rotates 90 degrees clockwise and adds one dot each step, what should the next figure show?

4. A team of 4 completes 48 tasks in 6 days. At the same rate, how many tasks can 6 people complete in 5 days?

5. A memo says “customer complaints dropped from 12% to 9%." Is that a 3% decrease?

6. Why pair a cognitive test with a structured interview?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a cognitive ability assessment?▾
A hiring assessment that measures how well a candidate reasons through numerical, verbal, abstract, and spatial problems tied to workplace performance.
Is this the same as an IQ test?▾
No. It is a four-domain hiring assessment, not a clinical or diagnostic IQ test, and HeyHRM does not currently provide norm-referenced candidate ranks.
How long does it take?▾
The current cognitive battery contains 40 questions across four domains and displays a 15-minute timer. It cannot be paused and resumed after it starts, so arrange any approved accommodation beforehand.
Which roles benefit most?▾
Roles with high learning demands, analytical complexity, or ambiguous decision-making benefit most.
Is it legal in hiring?▾
Requirements depend on the jurisdiction and how the assessment is designed, validated, administered, and used. Employers remain responsible for job relevance, adverse-impact monitoring, accessibility, accommodations, and qualified legal review.
Can I test one domain only?▾
The current standard cognitive assessment combines numerical, verbal, matrix, and spatial items in one battery. Verify the live configuration rather than assuming a domain can be deployed separately.
How do you score it?▾
The current result shows overall accuracy and efficiency plus accuracy by domain. It does not provide a norm-referenced candidate rank; interpret the result with other job-related evidence.
Can candidates prepare?▾
Candidates can review instructions and practice the general format. Clear advance information, reasonable accommodations, and job-relevant content help the exercise measure the intended skills rather than surprise or familiarity.
How does HeyHRM compare to SHL or Criteria?▾
Compare current products directly on job relevance, question and scoring controls, accessibility, validation evidence, security, candidate experience, integrations, and total cost. Verify vendor-specific details from current documentation.
Why combine this with interviews?▾
Because the test shows likely strengths and risks, while the interview validates them in context.
