Spatial Reasoning Test for Hiring

Measure how candidates mentally manipulate shapes, visualize 3D objects, and understand spatial relationships when those skills are job-related.

What It Measures

## What This Domain Measures The spatial reasoning domain covers mental rotation, spatial visualization, orientation, and visual pattern relationships. It is one source of evidence within HeyHRM's cognitive battery, not a diagnosis or a stand-alone prediction of job performance. Use the domain only when a documented job analysis shows that the underlying ability matters for essential duties. Review the content for unnecessary language, cultural, sensory, or device barriers; provide appropriate accommodations; and combine the result with other structured evidence.

How It Works

## How It Works The current cognitive battery contains 40 questions, including 10 spatial reasoning items, and displays a 15-minute overall timer. Once the battery starts, it cannot be paused and resumed. Employers should set expectations and arrange approved accommodations before the invitation is sent. The result includes overall accuracy and efficiency plus accuracy for each of the four cognitive domains. It does not currently include a norm-referenced candidate rank, an AI-written hiring recommendation, or automatic pipeline advancement. Use the domain result to plan consistent follow-up rather than as a final decision.

Sample Questions

1. Which of the following shapes is a rotation of the original figure? The original shows an L-shaped block oriented with the long arm pointing right and the short arm pointing up.

  • A.L-shape with long arm pointing left, short arm pointing down
  • B.L-shape with long arm pointing up, short arm pointing right
  • C.L-shape with long arm pointing right, short arm pointing down (mirror image)
  • D.T-shaped block

2. If this flat cross-shaped pattern (a central square with four squares attached to each side) were folded along the dotted lines, which 3D shape would it form?

  • A.An open-top cube (5 sides)
  • B.A closed cube (6 sides)
  • C.A rectangular prism
  • D.A triangular prism

3. Complete the 3x3 matrix pattern: Each row shows a circle that progressively adds one internal line (0, 1, 2 lines). Each column shows the circle getting progressively larger. What belongs in the bottom-right cell?

  • A.Small circle with 2 lines
  • B.Large circle with 2 lines
  • C.Large circle with 1 line
  • D.Medium circle with 3 lines

4. A cube has the following faces: top = red, front = blue, right = green. If you rotate the cube 90 degrees to the right (so the front face becomes the right face), what color is now facing you?

  • A.Red
  • B.Green
  • C.Blue
  • D.Cannot be determined

5. You are standing at the entrance of a warehouse facing north. You walk forward 20 meters, turn right, walk 10 meters, turn right again, and walk 5 meters. Which direction are you now facing?

  • A.North
  • B.South
  • C.East
  • D.West

6. A pipe runs through a wall at a 45-degree angle from upper-left to lower-right. If you cut the pipe with a horizontal slice, what shape is the cross-section?

  • A.Circle
  • B.Ellipse
  • C.Rectangle
  • D.Square

Frequently Asked Questions

Which jobs require spatial reasoning testing?▾
Consider it only for roles whose essential duties require mental rotation, spatial visualization, orientation, or visual pattern reasoning. Confirm relevance through a documented job analysis rather than relying on a broad occupation list.
Can spatial reasoning be improved with practice?▾
Practice and familiarity can affect results. Do not use one score to infer a fixed learning speed or future performance; validate the assessment for the role and interpret it with other evidence.
How is this different from an IQ test?▾
This page describes one domain in HeyHRM's cognitive battery. It is not a clinical IQ assessment and should not be used to diagnose or assign a general intelligence label.
How long does the spatial reasoning test take?▾
The current cognitive battery contains 40 questions, including 10 spatial items, and displays a 15-minute overall timer. It cannot be paused after it starts, so arrange approved accommodations beforehand.
What is spatial reasoning exactly?▾
Spatial reasoning (also called visual-spatial intelligence or spatial ability) is the capacity to understand, remember, and manipulate the positions and relationships of objects in space. It includes imagining how objects look from different angles (mental rotation), recognizing visual patterns (pattern recognition), understanding how 2D shapes become 3D objects (spatial visualization), and navigating or orienting yourself relative to objects (spatial orientation). It's one of the major cognitive abilities identified in psychometric research, distinct from verbal and mathematical reasoning.
Is the test fair across gender and demographics?▾
A structured assessment can support more consistent review, but it cannot guarantee fairness or eliminate bias. Validate job relevance, administer it consistently, provide appropriate accommodations, monitor adverse impact, and review results with other evidence.
Can I combine spatial reasoning with other tests?▾
Spatial reasoning is already one of four domains in the current cognitive battery. Use additional assessments only when each adds job-relevant evidence, and review every result separately rather than relying on a universal composite rank.
Do candidates need any special equipment?▾
Review and test the current supported-device experience before launch. Because visual detail and accessibility needs vary, give candidates a contact for technical help and accommodation requests.
How do you prevent cheating on a visual test?▾
No online assessment is cheat-proof. Use proportionate safeguards, explain what is monitored, protect candidate privacy, and confirm important evidence through structured interviews or representative work samples.
What does the spatial reasoning test cost?▾
Plan availability, limits, and prices can change. Check the live HeyHRM pricing page for current terms before purchasing or publishing a comparison.
